[1696] "Bhikkhus, 'This is the noble truth of suffering (dukkha)' has been declared by me. Therein the shades of meaning (vaṇṇā) are immeasurable, the phrasings (byañjanā) are immeasurable, the illustrations (saṅkāsanā) are immeasurable, as to how this is the noble truth of suffering. Bhikkhus, 'This is the noble truth of the origin of suffering' … 'This is the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering' has been declared by me. Therein the shades of meaning are immeasurable, the phrasings are immeasurable, the illustrations are immeasurable, as to how this is the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering.
Therefore, bhikkhus, an effort should be made [to understand]: 'This is suffering' … an effort should be made [to understand]: 'This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering.'"
