[1697] Bhikkhus, these four things are true, not untrue, not otherwise. What four? 'This is suffering (dukkha)': this, bhikkhus, is true, this is not untrue, this is not otherwise. 'This is the origin of suffering': this is true, this is not untrue, this is not otherwise. 'This is the cessation of suffering' … 'This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering': this is true, this is not untrue, this is not otherwise. These, bhikkhus, are the four things that are true, not untrue, not otherwise. Therefore, bhikkhus, effort should be made [to understand]: 'This is suffering' … effort should be made [to understand]: 'This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering.'
