[1698] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Vajjians at Koṭigāma. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, it is through not understanding, through not penetrating the four noble truths (ariyasacca) that this long course has thus been run and wandered through, both by me and by you. Which four? Bhikkhus, it is through not understanding, through not penetrating the noble truth of suffering (dukkha) that this long course has thus been run and wandered through, both by me and by you; the noble truth of the origin of suffering …; the noble truth of the cessation of suffering; it is through not understanding, through not penetrating the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering that this long course has thus been run and wandered through, both by me and by you. But now, bhikkhus, this noble truth of suffering has been understood and penetrated; the noble truth of the origin of suffering has been understood and penetrated; the noble truth of the cessation of suffering has been understood and penetrated; the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering has been understood and penetrated. Craving for existence (bhavataṇhā) has been cut off; the conduit to existence has been destroyed; now there is no renewed existence."
This is what the Blessed One said. Having said this, the Fortunate One (Sugata), the Teacher, further said this:
