[1717] "Bhikkhus, if one's clothes or head were ablaze, what should be done about it?"
"Venerable sir, if one's clothes or head were ablaze, extraordinary desire (chanda), effort (vāyāma), zeal (ussāha), exertion (ussoḷhī), unflagging persistence (appaṭivāni), mindfulness (sati), and clear comprehension (sampajañña) should be applied for the extinguishing of that very cloth or head."
"Bhikkhus, having looked on with equanimity at the blazing cloth or head, paying it no attention, extraordinary desire, effort, zeal, exertion, unflagging persistence, mindfulness, and clear comprehension should be applied for the breakthrough (abhisamaya), as it really is (yathābhūta), to the four noble truths (ariyasacca) not yet penetrated. To which four? To the noble truth of suffering (dukkha) … to the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering. Therefore, bhikkhus, effort should be made [to understand]: 'This is suffering' … effort should be made [to understand]: 'This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering.'"
