[1716] Bhikkhus, just as a stick thrown up into the air sometimes falls on its base, sometimes falls on its middle, and sometimes falls on its tip; even so, bhikkhus, beings hindered by ignorance (avijjā) and fettered by craving (taṇhā), running on and wandering [in the round of rebirths], sometimes go from this world to the other world, and sometimes come from the other world to this world. For what reason? Because, bhikkhus, of not having seen the four noble truths (ariyasacca). Which four? The noble truth of suffering (dukkha) … the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering. Therefore, bhikkhus, effort should be made [to realize]: "This is suffering" … effort should be made [to realize]: "This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering."
