[1715] But, bhikkhus, if anyone should speak thus: "Having penetrated (abhisamecca) as it really is (yathābhūta) the noble truth (ariyasacca) of suffering (dukkha), having penetrated as it really is the noble truth of the origin of suffering, having penetrated as it really is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering, having penetrated as it really is the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering, I shall rightly make an end of suffering" — this is possible.
Just as, bhikkhus, if someone should speak thus: "Having made a container of lotus leaves, or of palāsa leaves, or of māluvā leaves, I shall carry water or a palm leaf" — this is possible; even so, bhikkhus, if anyone should speak thus: "Having penetrated as it really is the noble truth of suffering … having penetrated as it really is the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering, I shall rightly make an end of suffering" — this is possible.
Therefore, bhikkhus, exertion should be made [to understand]: "This is suffering" … exertion should be made [to understand]: "This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering."
