[1736] But, bhikkhus, if someone should speak thus: "Having penetrated (abhisamecca) the noble truth of suffering (dukkha) as it really is … having penetrated the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering as it really is, I shall rightly make an end of suffering" — this is possible. Just as, bhikkhus, if someone should speak thus: "Having built the lower storey of a peaked house, I shall erect the upper storey" — this is possible; even so, bhikkhus, if someone should speak thus: "Having penetrated the noble truth of suffering as it really is … having penetrated the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering as it really is, I shall rightly make an end of suffering" — this is possible.
Therefore, bhikkhus, exertion should be made [to understand]: "This is suffering" … exertion should be made [to understand]: "This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering."
