[1735] "Bhikkhus, if anyone should speak thus: 'Without having penetrated the noble truth (ariyasacca) of suffering (dukkha) as it really is (yathābhūta) … without having penetrated the noble truth of the way leading to the cessation (nirodha) of suffering as it really is, I shall rightly make an end of suffering' — that is not possible. Suppose, bhikkhus, someone should speak thus: 'Without having built the lower story of a peaked house, I shall erect the upper story' — that is not possible. So too, bhikkhus, if anyone should speak thus: 'Without having penetrated the noble truth of suffering as it really is … without having penetrated the noble truth of the way leading to the cessation of suffering as it really is, I shall rightly make an end of suffering' — that is not possible."
