[1714] Bhikkhus, if anyone should speak thus: "Without having penetrated the noble truth (ariyasacca) of suffering (dukkha) as it really is, without having penetrated the noble truth of the origin of suffering as it really is, without having penetrated the noble truth of the cessation of suffering as it really is, without having penetrated the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering as it really is, I shall completely make an end of suffering" — this is not possible.
Just as, bhikkhus, if someone should speak thus: "Having made a basket of khadira leaves, or of sarala leaves, or of āmalaka leaves, I shall carry water or a palm leaf in it" — this is not possible; even so, bhikkhus, if anyone should speak thus: "Without having penetrated the noble truth of suffering as it really is … without having penetrated the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering as it really is, I shall completely make an end of suffering" — this is not possible.
