[1713] "And what, bhikkhus, has been declared by me? 'This is suffering (dukkha)'—this, bhikkhus, has been declared by me; 'This is the origin of suffering'—this has been declared by me; 'This is the cessation of suffering'—this has been declared by me; 'This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering'—this has been declared by me.
"And why, bhikkhus, has this been declared by me? Because this, bhikkhus, is connected with the goal, this pertains to the fundamentals of the holy life, this leads to disenchantment, to dispassion, to cessation, to peace, to direct knowledge, to full awakening, to Nibbāna. Therefore it has been declared by me.
"Therefore, bhikkhus, effort should be made [to understand]: 'This is suffering' … effort should be made [to understand]: 'This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering.'"
