[1727] But when you do think, bhikkhus, you should think: "This is suffering (dukkha)" … you should think: "This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering." For what reason? Because this thought, bhikkhus, is connected with the goal (atthasaṃhitā); it belongs to the fundamentals of the holy life (ādibrahmacariyakā); it leads to disenchantment (nibbidā), to dispassion (virāga), to cessation (nirodha), to peace (upasama), to direct knowledge (abhiññā), to full awakening (sambodha), to Nibbāna. Therefore, bhikkhus, exertion should be made (yogo karaṇīyo): "This is suffering" … exertion should be made: "This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering."
