[1742] But, bhikkhu, whatever ascetics or brahmins understand as it really is (yathābhūta): 'This is suffering (dukkha)' … understand as it really is: 'This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering' — they do not delight in volitional formations (saṅkhārā) that lead to birth … not delighting, they do not generate [such formations]. Not having generated them, they do not fall into the darkness of birth, nor do they fall into the darkness of aging, nor do they fall into the darkness of death, nor do they fall into the darkness of sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair. They are fully released from birth, from aging, from death, from sorrows, from lamentations, from pains, from griefs, from despairs; they are fully released from suffering, I say. Therefore, bhikkhus, exertion should be made [to understand]: 'This is suffering' … exertion should be made [to understand]: 'This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering.'
