[290] Setting at Sāvatthī. "Bhikkhus, just as in a guest house: those who have come from the eastern quarter take up lodging there; those who have come from the western quarter take up lodging there; those who have come from the northern quarter take up lodging there; those who have come from the southern quarter take up lodging there; khattiyas too come and take up lodging; brahmins too come and take up lodging; vessas too come and take up lodging; suddas too come and take up lodging — in just the same way, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu developing the Noble Eightfold Path (ariya aṭṭhaṅgika magga), cultivating the Noble Eightfold Path, fully understands by direct knowledge (abhiññā) those dhammas that are to be fully understood by direct knowledge; abandons by direct knowledge those dhammas that are to be abandoned by direct knowledge; realizes by direct knowledge those dhammas that are to be realized by direct knowledge; develops by direct knowledge those dhammas that are to be developed by direct knowledge."
