[39] And what, bhikkhus, is right effort (sammāvāyāmo)? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu generates desire (chanda) for the non-arising of evil, unwholesome states that have not yet arisen; he strives, arouses energy (vīriya), exerts his mind (citta), and endeavours. He generates desire for the abandoning of evil, unwholesome states that have arisen; he strives, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and endeavours. He generates desire for the arising of wholesome states that have not yet arisen; he strives, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and endeavours. He generates desire for the persistence, non-confusion, increase, expansion, development, and fulfilment of wholesome states that have arisen; he strives, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and endeavours. This, bhikkhus, is called right effort.
