[40] And what, bhikkhus, is right mindfulness (sammāsati)? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body (kāyānupassanā), ardent (ātāpī), clearly comprehending (sampajāno), possessed of mindfulness (sati), having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world (abhijjhā-domanassa); he dwells contemplating feeling (vedanā) in feelings, ardent, clearly comprehending, possessed of mindfulness, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world; he dwells contemplating mind (citta) in the mind, ardent, clearly comprehending, possessed of mindfulness, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world; he dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas, ardent, clearly comprehending, possessed of mindfulness, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. This, bhikkhus, is called right mindfulness.
