[394] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāketa, in the Añjana Grove, in the Deer Park. Then Kuṇḍaliya the wanderer (paribbājaka) approached the Blessed One; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when the courteous and memorable talk was concluded, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, Kuṇḍaliya the wanderer said this to the Blessed One: "Master Gotama, I am one who haunts monastery grounds and frequents assemblies (ārāmanisādī parisāvacaro). After the meal, when I have eaten my breakfast, this is my routine (ayam āhāro): I walk and wander from park to park, from garden to garden. There I see some ascetics and brahmins engaged in talk whose benefit is merely rescuing their own doctrine in debate (vādappamokkhānisaṃsa) and whose benefit is censuring others (upārambhānisaṃsa). But dwelling with what benefit does Master Gotama abide?" "Kuṇḍaliya, the Tathāgata dwells with the fruit of true knowledge (vijjā) and liberation (vimutti) as his benefit."
