[501] Bhikkhus, there are these five hindrances (nīvaraṇa) that cause blindness, cause lack of vision, cause lack of knowledge (ñāṇa), are conducive to the cessation of wisdom, side with vexation, and do not lead to Nibbāna. What five? The hindrance of sensual desire, bhikkhus, causes blindness, causes lack of vision, causes lack of knowledge, is conducive to the cessation of wisdom, sides with vexation, and does not lead to Nibbāna. The hindrance of ill will, bhikkhus, causes blindness … The hindrance of dullness and drowsiness, bhikkhus, causes blindness … The hindrance of restlessness and remorse, bhikkhus, causes blindness … The hindrance of doubt, bhikkhus, causes blindness, causes lack of vision, causes lack of knowledge, is conducive to the cessation of wisdom, sides with vexation, and does not lead to Nibbāna.
