[56] The setting at Sāvatthī (Sāvatthīnidānaṃ). Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Venerable Ānanda and the Venerable Bhadda were dwelling at Pāṭaliputta, in the Kukkuṭārāma. Then the Venerable Bhadda, having emerged from seclusion in the evening, approached the Venerable Ānanda; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Venerable Ānanda, and when the courteous and memorable talk was concluded, he sat down at one side. Sitting at one side, the Venerable Bhadda said this to the Venerable Ānanda: "Friend Ānanda, it is said, 'what is not the holy life (abrahmacariya), what is not the holy life.' What now, friend, is what is not the holy life?"
"Good, good, friend Bhadda! Good, friend Bhadda, is your discernment; good is your acumen; excellent is your inquiry. For thus do you ask, friend Bhadda: 'Friend Ānanda, it is said, "what is not the holy life, what is not the holy life." What now, friend, is what is not the holy life?'"
"So it is, friend."
"It is just this eightfold wrong path, friend, that is not the holy life; that is: wrong view … wrong concentration (samādhi)."
