[612] Suppose, brāhmaṇa, there were a bowl of water that is turbid, stirred up, muddy, set in the dark. A man with good eyes, examining the reflection of his own face in it, would not know or see it as it really is. So too, brāhmaṇa, on an occasion when one dwells with a mind (citta) obsessed by doubt (vicikicchā), overcome by doubt, and one does not know or see as it really is the escape from arisen doubt — on that occasion one does not know or see one's own good as it really is; on that occasion one does not know or see the good of others as it really is; on that occasion one does not know or see the good of both as it really is; and even hymns long recited do not come to mind, still less those not recited.
