[7] By this method too, Ānanda, it may be understood how this entire holy life (brahmacariya) is precisely this: good friendship (kalyāṇamittatā), good companionship, good comradeship. For, Ānanda, by relying on me as a good friend (kalyāṇamitta), beings subject to birth (jāti) are freed from birth; beings subject to aging (jarā) are freed from aging; beings subject to death (maraṇa) are freed from death; beings subject to sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair are freed from sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair. By this method, Ānanda, it may be understood how this entire holy life is precisely this: good friendship, good companionship, good comradeship.
