[747] Setting at Sāvatthī. Then the Venerable Bāhiya approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Bāhiya said this to the Blessed One: "It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would teach me the Dhamma in brief, so that, having heard the Dhamma from the Blessed One, I might dwell alone, withdrawn, heedful, ardent (ātāpī), and resolute."
"Therefore, Bāhiya, purify the very starting point of wholesome states (kusalā dhammā). And what is the starting point of wholesome states? Virtue (sīla) that is well purified and view (diṭṭhi) that is straight."
