[871] And what, bhikkhus, is the faculty of faith (saddhindriyaṃ)? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple (ariyasāvako) has faith (saddhā); he places faith in the awakening of the Tathāgata thus: "That Blessed One is indeed an arahant, a perfectly enlightened one, accomplished in true knowledge and conduct, a fortunate one, knower of the world, unsurpassed trainer of persons to be tamed, teacher of devas and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One." This, bhikkhus, is called the faculty of faith.
