[958] Here, bhikkhus, while a bhikkhu dwells diligent, ardent, and resolute, the faculty of grief (domanassindriya) arises. He understands thus: 'This faculty of grief has arisen in me; and that has a sign, has a source, has a formation, has a condition. That the faculty of grief could arise without a sign, without a source, without a formation, without a condition—that is impossible.' He understands the faculty of grief, he understands the origin of the faculty of grief, he understands the cessation of the faculty of grief, and he understands where the arisen faculty of grief ceases without remainder. And where does the arisen faculty of grief cease without remainder? Here, bhikkhus, with the subsiding of thought and examination, a bhikkhu enters and dwells in the second jhāna, which has internal confidence and unification of mind (citta), is without thought and without examination, and has rapture (pīti) and happiness born of concentration (samādhi). It is here that the arisen faculty of grief ceases without remainder. This, bhikkhus, is called a bhikkhu who has understood the cessation of the faculty of grief; he directs his mind toward that state.
