[975] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāketa, in the Añjana Grove, in the Deer Park. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, is there a method of exposition (pariyāya), relying on which method the five faculties (indriya) are the five powers (bala), and the five powers are the five faculties?"
"Venerable sir, our teachings are rooted in the Blessed One, guided by the Blessed One, have the Blessed One as their recourse. It would be good indeed, venerable sir, if the meaning of this statement would become clear to the Blessed One himself. Having heard it from the Blessed One, the bhikkhus will remember it." …
