[118] Now at that time an extra bowl (atirekapatta) had come into the possession of the Venerable Ānanda, and the Venerable Ānanda wished to give that bowl to the Venerable Sāriputta; but the Venerable Sāriputta was dwelling at Sāketa. Then it occurred to the Venerable Ānanda: "A training rule (sikkhāpada) has been laid down by the Blessed One: 'An extra bowl is not to be kept.' Now this extra bowl has come into my possession, and I wish to give this bowl to the Venerable Sāriputta; but the Venerable Sāriputta is dwelling at Sāketa. How, then, should I proceed?" Then the Venerable Ānanda reported this matter to the Blessed One.
"But, Ānanda, how long will it be before Sāriputta comes?"
"On the ninth day, Blessed One, or the tenth."
Then the Blessed One, on account of that occasion, in that connection, having given a talk on the Dhamma, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow an extra bowl to be kept for ten days at most. And thus, bhikkhus, should you recite this training rule: 'An extra bowl may be kept for ten days at most; for one who exceeds that limit, there is an offense entailing relinquishment with confession (nissaggiya pācittiya).'"
