[182] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus (bhikkhu), quarrelling with well-behaved (pesala) bhikkhus, insulted the well-behaved bhikkhus—with regard to birth, to name, to clan, to work, to craft, to illness, to physical features, to defilements (kilesa), and to offenses (āpatti)—and with degrading abuse they scolded and disparaged them.
Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … criticized, denounced, and spread it about: "How can the group-of-six bhikkhus, quarrelling with well-behaved bhikkhus, insult the well-behaved bhikkhus—with regard to birth, to name, to clan, to work, to craft, to illness, to physical features, to defilements, and to offenses—and with degrading abuse scold and disparage them?"
Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Is it true, as is said, bhikkhus, that you, quarrelling with well-behaved bhikkhus, insulted the well-behaved bhikkhus—with regard to birth, to name, to clan, to work, to craft, to illness, to physical features, to defilements, and to offenses—and with degrading abuse scolded and disparaged them?" "It is true, Blessed One." The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How can you, foolish men, quarrelling with well-behaved bhikkhus, insult the well-behaved bhikkhus—with regard to birth … and with degrading abuse scold and disparage them? This, foolish men, is not for the confidence of those without confidence, nor for the increase [of confidence] of those already confident …" And having rebuked them and given a Dhamma talk, he addressed the bhikkhus.
