[286] **Line by line (padaso)** means: by line (pada), by subsequent line (anupada), by syllable (anvakkhara), by subsequent phrase (anubyañjana).
**A line (pada)** means: having begun together, they conclude together.
**A subsequent line (anupada)** means: having begun separately, they conclude together.
**A syllable (anvakkhara)** means: while "rūpaṃ aniccaṃ" ("form is impermanent") is being recited, he brings in the syllable "rū" [together].
**A subsequent phrase (anubyañjana)** means: while "rūpaṃ aniccaṃ" is being recited, he utters the sound "vedanā aniccā" ("feeling is impermanent").
Whatever is a line, whatever is a subsequent line, whatever is a syllable, whatever is a subsequent phrase — all this is called "dhamma line by line."
**Dhamma** means: that spoken by the Buddha, spoken by disciples, spoken by seers, spoken by deities, connected with the goal, connected with the Dhamma.
