[289] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Āḷavī, at the Aggāḷava Shrine. Now at that time lay followers (upāsakā) were coming to the monastery to hear the Dhamma. When the Dhamma had been spoken, the elder bhikkhus went to their respective dwellings, but the newly ordained bhikkhus lay down to sleep right there in the attendance hall together with the lay followers — with muddled mindfulness, not clearly comprehending, naked, muttering in their sleep, and snoring.¹
The lay followers complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "How can the venerable ones lie down to sleep with muddled mindfulness, not clearly comprehending, naked, muttering in their sleep, and snoring?"
Bhikkhus heard those lay followers complaining, criticizing, and spreading it about. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "How can bhikkhus lie down to sleep together with one who is not fully ordained (anupasampanna)?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. …
"Is it true, bhikkhus, as is said, that bhikkhus lie down to sleep together with one who is not fully ordained?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How, bhikkhus, can those foolish men lie down to sleep together with one who is not fully ordained? This, bhikkhus, is not for the confidence of those who are without confidence …
"And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Whatever bhikkhu should lie down to sleep together with one who is not fully ordained, there is an offense entailing expiation (pācittiya)."
And thus this training rule was laid down by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus.
