[290] Then the Blessed One, having dwelt at Āḷavī for as long as he wished, set out on tour toward Kosambī. Wandering on tour by stages, he arrived at Kosambī. There the Blessed One dwelt at Kosambī, in the Badarikārāma.
The bhikkhus said this to the venerable Rāhula: "Friend Rāhula, a training rule (sikkhāpada) has been laid down by the Blessed One: one should not lie down to sleep together with one who is not fully ordained (anupasampanna). Friend Rāhula, find yourself a sleeping place."
Then the venerable Rāhula, not obtaining a sleeping place, lay down to sleep in the privy.
Then the Blessed One, rising at the time of dawn at the close of the night, approached the privy; having approached, he cleared his throat. The venerable Rāhula also cleared his throat.
"Who is here?"
"It is I, Blessed One — Rāhula."
"Why are you lying here, Rāhula?"
Then the venerable Rāhula informed the Blessed One of the matter.
Then the Blessed One, having given a talk on the Dhamma on account of that occasion, on account of that incident, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow one to lie down to sleep together with one who is not fully ordained for two or three nights. And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule:
"Whatever bhikkhu should lie down to sleep together with one who is not fully ordained for more than two or three nights, there is an offense of pācittiya."
