[37] **"If he should keep it beyond that, even when an expectation exists"** means:
When the original robe-cloth (mūlacīvara) arose that very day and the expected robe-cloth (paccāsācīvara) arises, it should be made up within ten days.
When the original robe-cloth has arisen two days [before] … When the original robe-cloth has arisen three days [before] … When the original robe-cloth has arisen four days [before] … When the original robe-cloth has arisen five days [before] … When the original robe-cloth has arisen six days [before] … When the original robe-cloth has arisen seven days [before] … When the original robe-cloth has arisen eight days [before] … When the original robe-cloth has arisen nine days [before] … When the original robe-cloth has arisen ten days [before] … and the expected robe-cloth arises, it should be made up within ten days.
When the original robe-cloth has arisen eleven days [before] … When the original robe-cloth has arisen twelve days [before] … When the original robe-cloth has arisen thirteen days [before] … When the original robe-cloth has arisen fourteen days [before] … When the original robe-cloth has arisen fifteen days [before] … When the original robe-cloth has arisen sixteen days [before] … When the original robe-cloth has arisen seventeen days [before] … When the original robe-cloth has arisen eighteen days [before] … When the original robe-cloth has arisen nineteen days [before] … When the original robe-cloth has arisen twenty days [before] and the expected robe-cloth arises, it should be made up within ten days.
When the original robe-cloth has arisen twenty-one days [before] and the expected robe-cloth arises, it should be made up within nine days. When the original robe-cloth has arisen twenty-two days [before] and the expected robe-cloth arises, it should be made up within eight days. When the original robe-cloth has arisen twenty-three days [before] … it should be made up within seven days. When the original robe-cloth has arisen twenty-four days [before] … it should be made up within six days. When the original robe-cloth has arisen twenty-five days [before] … it should be made up within five days. When the original robe-cloth has arisen twenty-six days [before] … it should be made up within four days. When the original robe-cloth has arisen twenty-seven days [before] … it should be made up within three days. When the original robe-cloth has arisen twenty-eight days [before] … it should be made up within two days. When the original robe-cloth has arisen twenty-nine days [before] and the expected robe-cloth arises, it should be made up within one day.
When the original robe-cloth has arisen thirty days [before] and the expected robe-cloth arises, on that very day it should be determined (adhiṭṭhāna), assigned (vikappana), or given away. If he should not determine it, assign it, or give it away, then at the arising of dawn on the thirty-first day it becomes subject to forfeiture (nissaggiya): it must be forfeited to a Saṅgha, to a group, or to an individual.
"And thus, bhikkhus, should it be forfeited: … 'Venerable sirs, this out-of-season robe-cloth (akālacīvara) of mine has exceeded the month and is subject to forfeiture. I forfeit it to the Saṅgha.' … 'should give it back' … 'should give it back' … 'I give this to the venerable one.'"
