[387] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now on that occasion the bhikkhus of the group of seventeen were repairing a certain large outlying dwelling (vihāra), thinking, "Here we shall spend the rains." The bhikkhus of the group of six saw the bhikkhus of the group of seventeen repairing the dwelling, and having seen them, they said this: "Friends, these bhikkhus of the group of seventeen are repairing a dwelling. Come, let us evict them." Some said this: "Wait, friends, until they have repaired it; when it has been repaired, we shall evict them."
Then the bhikkhus of the group of six said this to the bhikkhus of the group of seventeen: "Get out, friends; the dwelling falls to us."
"Friends, should you not have told us beforehand? We would have repaired another one."
"Friends, does the dwelling not belong to the Saṅgha?"
"Yes, friends, the dwelling belongs to the Saṅgha."
"Get out, friends; the dwelling falls to us."
"The dwelling is large, friends; you too may live here, and we too shall live here."
"Get out, friends; the dwelling falls to us" — and, angry and displeased, seizing them by the neck, they threw them out. Being thrown out, they wept.
Bhikkhus said this: "Friends, why do you weep?"
"Friends, these bhikkhus of the group of six, angry and displeased, are throwing us out of a dwelling belonging to the Saṅgha."
Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … criticized, complained, and spread it about: "How can the bhikkhus of the group of six, angry and displeased, throw bhikkhus out of a dwelling belonging to the Saṅgha?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One.
Then the Blessed One questioned the bhikkhus of the group of six: "Is it true, bhikkhus, as is said, that you, angry and displeased, threw bhikkhus out of a dwelling belonging to the Saṅgha?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How can you, foolish men, angry and displeased, throw bhikkhus out of a dwelling belonging to the Saṅgha? This, foolish men, is not for the confidence of those without confidence … And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule:
'Should any bhikkhu, angry and displeased, throw a bhikkhu out of a dwelling belonging to the Saṅgha, or have him thrown out, there is an offense of pācittiya.'"
