[392] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time two bhikkhus were staying in a dwelling belonging to the Saṅgha with an upper loft: one dwelt below, one above. The bhikkhu above sat down hastily on a bed with detachable legs (āhaccapādaka). A leg of the bed fell off and landed on the head of the bhikkhu below. That bhikkhu let out a cry. The bhikkhus ran up and said to that bhikkhu, "Why, friend, did you cry out?" Then that bhikkhu told the matter to the bhikkhus.
Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying, "How can a bhikkhu sit down hastily on a bed with detachable legs in the upper loft of a dwelling belonging to the Saṅgha?" Then those bhikkhus reported the matter to the Blessed One.
Then the Blessed One questioned that bhikkhu: "Is it true, bhikkhu, as they say, that you sat down hastily on a bed with detachable legs in the upper loft of a dwelling belonging to the Saṅgha?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him: "How could you, foolish man, sit down hastily on a bed with detachable legs in the upper loft of a dwelling belonging to the Saṅgha? This, foolish man, is not for the confidence of those without confidence …
"And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule:
"Should any bhikkhu sit down or lie down on a bed or a bench with detachable legs in the upper loft of a dwelling belonging to the Saṅgha, there is an offense entailing expiation (pācittiya)."
