[424] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the elder bhikkhus were exhorting the bhikkhunīs in turn. Now at that time it was the venerable Cūḷapanthaka's turn to exhort the bhikkhunīs. The bhikkhunīs said thus: "Today the exhortation will not be effective; presently the master Cūḷapanthaka will just utter that same inspired utterance (udāna) again and again." Then those bhikkhunīs approached the venerable Cūḷapanthaka; having approached and paid homage to the venerable Cūḷapanthaka, they sat down to one side. As those bhikkhunīs were seated to one side, the venerable Cūḷapanthaka said this to them: "Are you in concord, sisters?"
"We are in concord, master."
"Are the eight important rules (garudhammā) being observed, sisters?"
"They are being observed, master."
Having delivered it with the words, "This, sisters, is the exhortation," he spoke this inspired utterance again and again:
"For the sage (muni) of heightened mind, heedful,
training in the paths of sagehood,
sorrows do not arise—for one who is such (tādī),
at peace, ever possessed of mindfulness (sati)."
