[462] Now at that time a certain bhikkhu who had gone forth from Rājagaha went to the family of his relatives. The people, saying, "At long last the venerable one has come!" respectfully prepared a meal. A bhikkhunī who was a frequenter of that family (kulupikā) said this to those people: "Give, friends, the meal to the master."
Then that bhikkhu, knowing that it had been prohibited by the Blessed One to eat almsfood (piṇḍapāta) procured by a bhikkhunī, being scrupulous, did not accept it; and he was not able to walk for alms, so he went without his meal. Then that bhikkhu, having gone to the monastery, informed the bhikkhus of this matter. The bhikkhus informed the Blessed One of this matter.
Then the Blessed One, on that account, in that connection, having given a Dhamma talk, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow one, knowing, to eat almsfood procured by a bhikkhunī when there was prior initiative on the part of householders. And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Whatever bhikkhu should knowingly eat almsfood procured by a bhikkhunī, except when there was prior initiative on the part of householders, there is an offense of Pācittiya."
