[471] Now at that time the Venerable Sāriputta, traveling through the Kosalan country to Sāvatthī, approached a certain public rest house (āvasatha). The people, thinking, "After a long time the Elder has come," served him respectfully. Then, after the Venerable Sāriputta had eaten, a severe illness arose in him, and he was unable to depart from that rest house. Then on the second day those people said to the Venerable Sāriputta: "Eat, venerable sir." Then the Venerable Sāriputta, being scrupulous, thinking, "It has been prohibited by the Blessed One to eat rest-house alms food (āvasathapiṇḍa) while staying on again and again," did not accept, and so went without his meal. Then the Venerable Sāriputta, having gone to Sāvatthī, informed the bhikkhus of this matter. The bhikkhus informed the Blessed One of this matter. Then the Blessed One, having given a talk on the Dhamma with reference to that occasion, with reference to that incident, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow a bhikkhu who is ill to eat rest-house alms food while staying on again and again. And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
'A bhikkhu who is not ill may eat one rest-house alms meal; should he eat more than that, there is an offense entailing expiation (pācittiya).'"
