[487] Now at that time a certain bhikkhu was sick. Another bhikkhu, taking almsfood, approached that bhikkhu; having approached, he said to that bhikkhu: "Eat, friend."
"Enough, friend; I have the expectation of a meal."
That bhikkhu's almsfood was brought late in the day. That bhikkhu could not eat as much as he had wished. They reported this matter to the Blessed One.
Then the Blessed One, on that account, in that connection, having given a talk on the Dhamma, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow a bhikkhu who is sick to eat an out-of-turn meal (paramparabhojana). And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
'For an out-of-turn meal, except on an occasion, there is an offence of pācittiya. Here this is the occasion: an occasion of sickness — this is the occasion here.'"
And thus this training rule was laid down by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus.
