[488] Now at that time, it being the robe-giving season (cīvaradānasamaya), people prepared a meal together with robes and invited bhikkhus, saying, "Having fed you, we shall clothe you with robes." The bhikkhus, being scrupulous, did not accept, thinking, "An out-of-turn meal (paramparabhojana) has been prohibited by the Blessed One." Little robe-material accrued. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow an out-of-turn meal to be eaten at the robe-giving season. And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada): For an out-of-turn meal, except on an occasion, there is an offense of Pācittiya. Herein this is the occasion: an occasion of illness, the occasion of the robe-giving season — this is the occasion herein." And thus was this training rule laid down by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus.
