[489] Now at that time people were inviting bhikkhus who were making robes to a meal. The bhikkhus, being scrupulous, did not accept, thinking, "An out-of-turn meal (paramparabhojana) has been prohibited by the Blessed One." They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow an out-of-turn meal to be eaten at the time of robe-making. And thus, bhikkhus, should you recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"For an out-of-turn meal, except on an occasion, there is an offense of pācittiya. Herein, this is the occasion: a time of illness, a time of giving robes, a time of robe-making — this is the occasion herein."
And thus was this training rule laid down by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus.
