[549] Now at that time, at the robe-giving season, bhikkhus, being anxious with scruples, did not visit families. Only a little robe-cloth accrued. They informed the Blessed One of this matter. "Bhikkhus, I allow you to visit families at the robe-giving season. And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule:
"Should any bhikkhu who has been invited and is provided with a meal engage in visiting among families before the meal or after the meal, except at a proper occasion, there is an offense of expiation (pācittiya). Herein the occasion is this: the robe-giving season — this is the occasion herein."
And thus this training rule was laid down by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus.
