[490] Then the Blessed One, in the morning, having dressed and taken his bowl and robe, with the Venerable Ānanda as his attendant ascetic (pacchāsamaṇa), approached a certain family; having approached, he sat down on the seat that had been prepared. Then those people gave food to the Blessed One and to the Venerable Ānanda. The Venerable Ānanda, being scrupulous, did not accept it.
"Take it, Ānanda."
"Enough, Blessed One; I have an expectation of a meal (bhattapaccāsā)."
"In that case, Ānanda, assign it (vikappetvā) and take it."
Then the Blessed One, on that occasion, in that connection, having given a talk on the Dhamma, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow one, having assigned an expected meal, to eat an out-of-turn meal (paramparabhojana). And it should be assigned thus, bhikkhus: 'I give my expected meal to so-and-so.'"
