[496] **"And when a bhikkhu has arrived at a family"**: **Family** means the four families: a khattiya family, a brahmin family, a vessa family, a sudda family.
**"Arrived"**: arrived there.
**Cake (pūva)** means anything whatsoever prepared for the purpose of a present.²
**Meal-cake (mantha)** means anything whatsoever prepared for the purpose of provisions for a journey.
**"Should invite him to take as much as he wants"** means: [saying,] "Take as much as you wish."
**"If he wishes"** means: if he desires.
**"Two or three bowlfuls may be accepted"** means: two or three bowlfuls may be accepted.
**"If he should accept more than that"**:³ if he accepts beyond that, there is an offense entailing expiation (pācittiya).
Having accepted two or three bowlfuls, on departing from there, upon seeing a bhikkhu he should inform him: "In such-and-such a place two or three bowlfuls have been accepted by me; do not accept anything there." If, having seen him, he does not inform him, there is an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). If, having been informed, he accepts, there is an offense of wrong-doing.
