[500] Now at that time bhikkhus were taking almsfood of excellent quality to bhikkhus who were sick. The sick ones could not eat as much as they wished, and the bhikkhus threw that food away.
The Blessed One heard a loud noise, a great noise, a noise like the cawing of crows, and having heard it he addressed the Venerable Ānanda: "Ānanda, what is that loud noise, that great noise, that noise like the cawing of crows?"
Then the Venerable Ānanda informed the Blessed One of this matter.
"But, Ānanda, would the bhikkhus eat what is left over (atiritta) by the sick?"
"They would not eat it, Blessed One."
Then the Blessed One, having given a talk on the Dhamma with reference to that occasion, with reference to that incident, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow you to eat what is left over both by one who is sick and by one who is not sick. And, bhikkhus, it should be made left over thus: 'All this is enough.'
"And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule:
"Should any bhikkhu who has eaten and has refused further food (pavārita) chew or consume solid food or soft food that is not left over, there is an offense of pācittiya."
