[499] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time a certain brahmin, having invited bhikkhus, fed them. The bhikkhus, having eaten and refused further food (pavārita), went to the families of their relatives; some ate again, some took almsfood (piṇḍapāta) and departed.
Then that brahmin said this to his neighbors: "Sirs, the bhikkhus have been satisfied by me. Come, I shall satisfy you as well."
They said this: "How, sir, will you satisfy us? Even those who were invited by you came to our houses — some ate, some took almsfood and departed."
Then that brahmin complained, criticized, and spread it about: "How can the venerable ones, having eaten in our house, eat elsewhere? Am I not able to give as much as is wanted?"
Bhikkhus heard that brahmin complaining, criticizing, and spreading it about. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … complained, criticized, and spread it about: "How can bhikkhus who have eaten and refused further food eat elsewhere?" …
"Is it true, bhikkhus, as they say, that bhikkhus who have eaten and refused further food eat elsewhere?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How, bhikkhus, can those foolish men (moghapurisa), having eaten and refused further food, eat elsewhere? This, bhikkhus, is not for the confidence of those without confidence, nor for the increase of confidence of those already confident. … And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Should any bhikkhu who has eaten and refused further food chew hard food or consume soft food, there is an offense entailing confession (pācittiya)."
And thus this training rule was laid down by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus.
