[523] Now at that time bhikkhus were troubled by scruples concerning water and tooth-wood (udakadantapoṇa). They informed the Blessed One of this matter. "Bhikkhus, I allow water and tooth-wood, having taken them oneself, to be consumed. And thus, bhikkhus, should you recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
'Should any bhikkhu convey to the door of the mouth nourishment that has not been given, except water and tooth-wood, there is an offense of pācittiya.'"
