**"Given"** means: when the giver is giving with the body, with something connected to the body, or by releasing (throwing), and standing within arm's reach (hatthapāsa) one receives it with the body or with something connected to the body — this is called "given."
**"Food" (āhāra)** means: setting aside water and tooth-cleaning sticks, whatever may be swallowed — this is called food.
**"Except water and tooth-cleaning sticks":** setting aside water and tooth-cleaning sticks.
If he takes it, thinking, "I shall chew it, I shall eat it," there is an offense of wrongdoing (dukkaṭa). For every act of swallowing, there is an offense entailing expiation (pācittiya).
