[535] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan (Upanando Sakyaputto), having gone to the house of a friend, sat down in the sleeping-room together with that man's wife. Then that man approached the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan; having approached, he paid homage to the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, that man said to his wife: "Give almsfood to the master."
Then that woman gave almsfood to the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan. Then that man said to the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan: "You may go now, venerable sir, since almsfood has been given to the master."
Then that woman, having observed, "This man is overcome (pariyuṭṭhito)," said to the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan: "Please remain seated, venerable sir; do not go just yet."
A second time that man … A third time that man said to the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan: "You may go now, venerable sir, since almsfood has been given to the master."
A third time that woman said to the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan: "Please remain seated, venerable sir; do not go just yet."
Then that man went out and complained to the bhikkhus: "Venerable sirs, this master Upananda is sitting in the sleeping-room with my wife; though being dismissed by me, he does not wish to go. I am busy; I have much to be done."
Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … deplored, criticized, and spread it about: "How can the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan intrude upon a family with food (sabhojane kule) and sit down there?" …
"Is it true, as they say, Upananda, that you intruded upon a family with food and sat down there?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him: "How could you, foolish man, intrude upon a family with food and sit down there? This, foolish man, is not for the confidence of those without confidence, nor for the increase of confidence in those already confident …
"And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Should any bhikkhu intrude upon a family with food and sit down there, there is an offense of pācittiya."
