[606] Now at that time, bhikkhus had scruples even about a lamp, even about a fire, even about the fire-hall (jantāghara). They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow, when there is such a reason, kindling a fire or having one kindled. And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
Should any bhikkhu who is not ill, seeking to warm himself, kindle a fire or have one kindled, except when there is such a reason, it is an offense of expiation (pācittiya)."
