[613] Now at that time bhikkhus, having done building work (navakamma), out of scrupulousness did not bathe; they lay down with their limbs covered in sweat. Both robe and lodging were spoiled. They informed the Blessed One of this matter. "Bhikkhus, I allow bathing at intervals of less than a half-month at a time of work. And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Should any bhikkhu bathe at intervals of less than a half-month, except on a proper occasion, there is an offense entailing expiation (pācittiya). Herein this is the occasion: 'a month and a half remaining of the hot season' and the first month of the rains—thus these two and a half months are the hot time, the sweltering time; a time of illness; a time of work—this is the occasion herein."
And thus was this training rule laid down by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus.
