[614] Now at that time, bhikkhus who had traveled along a long road, being scrupulous, did not bathe; they lay down with their bodies covered in sweat. Both the robe and the lodging became soiled. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow bathing at an interval of less than half a month on an occasion of traveling a long road. And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Whatever bhikkhu should bathe at an interval of less than half a month, except on an occasion, there is an offense of expiation (pācittiya). Herein this is the occasion: 'a month and a half remaining of the hot season' and the first month of the rains—thus these two and a half months are the hot time, the time of burning distress; an occasion of illness; an occasion of work; an occasion of traveling a long road—this is the occasion herein."
And thus was this training rule laid down by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus.
