[615] Now at that time, several bhikkhus, doing robe-making work in the open air, were covered by a dust-laden wind, and rain fell in a light sprinkle. The bhikkhus, being scrupulous, did not bathe; they lay down with damp bodies. Both the robe and the lodging were spoiled. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow bathing at an interval of less than a half-month at a time of wind and rain. And thus, bhikkhus, should you recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Should any bhikkhu bathe at an interval of less than a half-month, except on an occasion, there is an offense of expiation (pācittiya). Herein, this is the occasion: 'A month and a half remaining of the hot season' and the first month of the rains — these two and a half months are the hot time, the time of fever; the time of illness; the time of work; the time of going on a journey; the time of wind and rain — this herein is the occasion."
